On Tuesday 13 March, the Year 2 to 9 students participated in an incursion celebrating local Indigenous culture. Derek Nannup from Yanchep National Park spent the day working with the students, creating digeridoo music and dances that helped the students understand Dreamtime stories.
The students also participated in a free dress day, bringing a gold coin donation for wearing a red, yellow or black top. By wearing the colours of the Aboriginal flag, the students were further celebrating Indigenous culture. The total amount raised was $516.05, which has been donated to Oxfam’s Close the Gap campaign. The campaign is working to provide the Indigenous community with health care that will reduce the gap in life expectancy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Both students and teachers enjoyed the day, with Mollie Selfridge (Year 4) going so far as to ask Derek if he could come to school every day. Miss Wall was particularly active throughout the incursion, as her baby danced whenever she heard the digeridoo!
