Family Fun Day 2017
The sunlight shimmered through the early morning fog on Saturday 16 September, as the masses gathered at the gates of St James’. The first ever Family Fun Day in 2016 had been a memorable event that helped define the school, so perhaps history would not look upon the event so kindly the second time around. The stall holders arrived, the staff and parents set up, the fog burnt off and the sun poked through the spring sky. Our prayers were answered; the day ahead would be kind to the community.
There was a new formula this year. The Art Show commenced the festivities on Friday night, and the carnival atmosphere arrived on the Saturday morning. Show rides, show bags, amazing local produce, pony rides, the animal farm and a few student-centred stalls made up the bulk of the market place. Meanwhile, students and community groups paraded on stage in the courtyard and many parent helpers and staff cooked a variety of foods in our Food Technology Room.
The community showed up in droves, the kids were covered in fairy floss and coloured putty and the parents enjoyed the retreat to the shaded areas dotted with student-created picnic benches.
Once again, the committee steered the ship (the terrific Ts), the Family Fun Day Committee, (Tara Beutel, Tarryn Leaman, Kelly Sudholz-Bennett, Meg McCreanor, Brenda Goulter and Klaudia Denison) the staff and parents manned the oars and the community spoke - loudly. The hermits of winter emerged from their burrows to the spring sunshine and celebrated being part of their lively suburb in the pioneering north. The final profit was unknown at the time of this article, but early indications were that the total profit was approaching $12,000. The money will go towards several projects including:
- Custom shade shelters for the four Houses
- A coffee machine for student barista courses and parent Coffee Club
- Increased storage for breakfast club
- A new fridge for breakfast club
Once again, this event was amazing, the local people were positive, and the School community was united as one. I would like to sincerely thank the parents who pitched in on the day and helped out, as well as those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes leading up to the event. The staff of St James’ were united as one and made me feel extremely proud of what can be achieved with a unified team. The Family Fun Day is not scheduled again until 2019, with the alternate year being used for the Art Show and Quiz Extravaganza. Look out for these events in next year’s calendar.
