Subjects being offered in 2018

Found in: Principal's Blog

These are exciting times at St James’! Next year we will see our first Year 9 students determining their own educational pathways, as we introduce option selections.

The range of subjects being offered in 2018 includes:

  • Marine Studies
  • Visual Art
  • Digital Technology and Robotics
  • Music
  • Design Technology-Woodwork
  • Japanese
  • Food Science Technology
  • Drama Studies

This adolescent period is where students start to journey down pathways of interest and begin to specialise. The important thing about these Year 9 options is that the students can experiment in subjects that seem exciting and are likely to lead to potential ATAR, TAFE or trades pathways. Year 9 and 10 act as a safety net to allow this experimentation, before the difficult choices come in the selection of Year 11 and 12 pathways.

It is important that students seek input from teachers, parents, friends and tertiary institutions long before they are faced with this dilemma of which subjects to choose in Year 11 and 12. The process of getting to Year 10 when these selections are required, should be exciting. It should acknowledge the subject strengths and interests of that student.

If you need advice on possible future pathways, please don't hesitate to contact the School and ask for advice on how to approach these difficult choices.

Mr Adrian Pree
